How Does iPhone Measure Distance Walked

Question: Q: Health App Inaccurate Distance

How to use your iPhone to see the distance you walk, hike, or run

Just thought you might be interested in knowing …

The “Walking + Running Distance” measured by the Apple Health app is somewhat inaccurate. This has been the case for several iterations of the app, and on different iPhones, and continues in iOS 11.1. The error varies but is generally about 10% less than the actual distance walked/run.

How do I know the app is inaccurate? I’ve used the app on very accurately measured flat walking/running paths , and the app is consistently about 10% short of the actual distance.

Perhaps more importantly, this doesn’t appear to be a hardware issue. The MapMyWalk app is very accurate, to within a few yards of a mile, and the Apple Health App is always 5% to 10% short of the actual distance and the distance measured by MapMyWalk. Seems there’s something odd about the way the Health app interprets/uses GPS readings.

Devices Not Included In The Test

We attempted to test a diverse range of products from a variety of companies. That included brand name smartwatch and activity trackers, along with some lesser known models. Unfortunately, there are a handful of devices that weren’t able make it into our test. The most prominent are activity trackers from Jawbone, including the Up Move, Up24, Up2 and Up3, and Android Wear watches. These were left out because of the way they sync with the Jawbone app the information isn’t visible in real-time, which made it difficult to measure the true distance we walked.

    Results From The Study Showed

the iPhones CoreMotion Pedometer to underestimate users steps by a mean of just 7.2 percent , and demonstrated a mean percent difference of 5.7 percent when compared to an ActiGraph GT9X Activity Monitor. On the other hand, the iPhone pedometers algorithm to estimate distance walked overestimated users travel by 43 percent , which the researchers attributed to its inaccurate application of users stride length. But how did they measure it?

The researchers wanted to investigate if the iPhones pedometer was reliable enough to measure the blood flow of PAD patients and their ability to walk. A team of researchers at Stanford built a ResearchKit app that uses the iPhones pedometer to conduct six-minute walk tests. The sample consisted of 114 participants with PAD and they were asked to perform a monitored walking test while they used the app and carried the ActiGraph monitor.

As you may know, pedometers have been used by Apples devices for a while now and some prior studies have suggested that it and other smartphones tools are sometimes more accurate than other fitness trackers. However, the feature in question was used in this study to investigate if it is viable to be used as a screening tool where precision is mandatory, but we know step count has been widely used by the fitness industry for wellness and health-related purposes. How Does Watch Determine Distance Walked If Location Services Are Off

IOS How to? | Measure distance using your iPhone?

Apple Watch 3 and iPhone XR

I rarely enable Location Services on my phone. When I go for an Outdoor Walk the Activity app tells me my step count and the distance covered. If Location Services are turned off how does it determine distance covered?

It seems to be using a step length of 83cm, which sounds about right, but Ive no idea where it gets that from.

    Any ideas?

The Apple Watch Series 3 and later comes with a built-in GPS chip. It uses a combination of GPS readings and arm movement which can be detected with the help of built-in accelerometer and give you an estimate of number of steps and distance walked.

Allowing the movement of the arm on which you are wearing the watch can lead the watch to give more accurate readings.

Apple also recommends you calibrate the watch to obtain better readings. Refer to this Apple Support document, Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy to learn more.

A related discussion on Apple Community Forum post, How does apple watch count steps?, sheds some more light on what calibration does to improve the readings:

How To Turn iPhone Into A Pedometer & Walking Distance Tracker

  • Open Health app and go to the Health Data tab
  • Tap on Fitness and enable the three currently functional sections:
    • Select Walking + Running Distance and flip the switch for Show On Dashboard to the ON position
    • Choose Steps and toggle Show On Dashboard to ON
    • Go to Flights Climbed and flip the same Show On Dashboard to ON
  • Tap back to the Dashboard tab in Health app to see the three functions and their respective charts
  • Now that the pedometer and distance movement functions are enabled, the rest is up to you, meaning you have to actually move around to see the statistics change.

The steps feature is quite accurate as long as you have the iPhone with you whether its in your pocket, in hand, or a pack seems to work and register as expected, and the mileage walking + running distance indicator is also apparently accurate enough from testing experience. The Flights Climbed function works well too, and is fairly interesting in that it uses the new air pressure sensor built into iPhones to detect even minor changes in altitude. Each flight is about the equivalent of a housing story of steps, so if you walked upstairs a single story in a house or office, it would register as a flight climbed. You dont need to be on actual stairs for the flights climbed to register though, it takes the relative assumption of height into consideration and works even on gradual inclines and declines too.

How to use Measure app on iPhone

A Stanford study recently published in npj Digital Medicine suggests that the iPhones step measurement capabilities are sufficient enough to monitor and measure patients activity remotely. However, the devices built-in walking distance measurement algorithm is inconsistent, and should not be used when gauging a patients activity or building a patient monitoring app for conditions such as peripheral artery disease .

    The Importance Of Measurements

Why is it important to know how to measure walking distance? If you’re trying to lose weight, maintaining an effective calorie-burning routine is one way to achieve your goals. While most health care experts advise people to engage in an aerobic activity a few times a week for at least 30 minutes, you can watch the clock or you can use your pedometer to make sure you’re getting the right amount of exercise. Using a calorie estimating calculator will help you determine how many calories you burn during certain activities. If you prefer to keep track of how far you’ve walked instead of how long you’ve walked, you can still use such a calculator to figure out how many calories you burn over certain distances.
